Air Base Challenge (ABC) Wales
A new and exciting challenge designed to take single event sportives one step further.
We have been approached by Wales Air Ambulance to design a route that visits each air base in Wales, represents a significant challenge and provides the opportunity for fund raising for this very worthwhile charity.
Entrants are limited to 12 and will be fully serviced throughout the route with two course vehicles carrying all your equipment and providing full mechanical backup, spares, including full bikes and providing hydration etc to keep you rolling.
The challenge can be taken over two or three days and involves a fantastic journey that takes you over Snowdonia, Berwin mountains and Brecon Beacons, through flat and undulating border counties, visiting Montgomery and Bishops Castle and takes you from North to South Wales using a route that cuts into England so crosses the width and length of Wales.
Two day event: day one 82 miles, day two 130 miles
Three day event: day one 82 miles, day two 72 miles, day three 58 miles
This event is very limited and will be held on 8/9/10 May 2009 and again on 7/8/9 August 2009.
Route:
Depart from Wales Air Ambulance Caernarfon to Caernarfon and head over Snowdonia on A4086 to Llanberis, Betws y Coed, A5 to junction with B4501 to Bala. Leave Bala on B4391 crossing the Berwyn mountains and descending through Llanfyllin to overnight stay at Welshpool. Make formal visit to wales Air Ambulance. Next day, leave Welshpool for Montgomery, Bishops Castle, to Knighton joining A 470 at Erwood and visiting Brecon. (three day event over night stay). Continue on A 470 crossing Brecon Beacons at Storey Arms, to Hirwaun, Neath, Jersey Marine to Mumbles and out to Swansea Airport and last Air Ambulance base.
Services:
Entrants will be provided with bed and breakfast facilities, and all hydration during the day, this excludes lunch and evening meal. Transport to North Wales and from Swansea is not included, however sufficient transport is available to transport all 12 entrants and cycles during the event and will be available to collect and deliver to public transport facilities. We may be able to assist with your transport arrangements so please call to discuss.
